Sustainability

Winding road through green rain forest

Our motivation

“At Heraeus Conamic, sustainability is not just a side project, it's an integral part of our daily operations for a more sustainable future.”

Michael Werth and Christoph Fark, CEOs of Heraeus Conamic

Heraeus Conamic is a technology leader in manufacturing and processing the industry`s highest purity fused silica and other high-end materials such as ceramics and composites. Our processes are energy-intensive, such as heating and melting quartz sand at extremely high temperatures.

Having said this, Heraeus Conamic has a special responsibility for sustainability. We prioritize this responsibility and implement sustainable practices to minimize our environmental impact.

We love to innovate and we strive for sustainability.

As a result we are thrusting Heraeus into a future that values sustainability as much as success.

We grow our business and mindset to enable a sustainable future.

This metamorphosis involves a conscious reduction of our footprint and an untiring pursuit of an enhanced handprint - all while fostering a heartprint that resonates with our core values.

We transform attitude to action.

We don't make sustainability at Heraeus Conamic, we make Heraeus Conamic more sustainable.

Our Footprint

As an energy-intensive company, we constantly work on ways to reduce our environmental footprint throughout our value chain, ideally to the point of carbon neutrality.

We contribute to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), e.g. SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13: Climate Action

To achieve our goals, we analysed Scope 1 and 2 emissions and started the implementation of our roadmap to significant reduction. We focus on three main levers to reduce carbon emission.

Our Handprint

In contrast to reducing our footprint, we work on increasing our handprint. Aware of the influence our actions have, we try to increase our positive impact on the environment and society while promoting initiatives towards sustainability.

With our products we contribute to environmental applications and the development of new energy sources.

These ambitions align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), e.g. SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Our Heartprint

With our heartprint, we focus on the social and emotional impact of sustainability. Through our Cultural Development@HCA initiative, we actively develop a sustainable high-performance culture. We foster ethical working conditions as well as diversity, equity and inclusion for our employees and stakeholders.

Additionally, we promote managing mental and physical energy at individual and team levels with a holistic approach to movement, mental well-being, nutrition, and recovery.

These initiatives also align with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) e.g. SDG 5: Gender Equality, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.

Our ambition for decarbonization

As part of our sustainability ambition, decarbonization is a crucial step towards achieving our ambitious goals of reducing our environmental footprint. This involves reducing both direct greenhouse gas emissions as well as indirect emissions resulting from the generation of purchased energy. We are committed to aligning with the group's objectives.

Levers to reduce CO₂e emissions

  • Energy Efficiency + 50001

Energy efficiency measures, along with compliance to the 50001 standard, are the starting point for achieving our ambitious sustainability goals.

Energy Management according to DIN EN ISO 50001

  • Renewable Energies

We prioritize and increase the use of green energy sources to power our operations.

  • Technology Shift

We are undergoing a technology shift to transition away from fossil fuel-based technology. As part of this shift, we are focused on developing environmentally friendly products that contribute to a greener future.

  • CO₂ Compensation

Only after exhausting all other options do we implement compensation measures. These measures mitigate any negative impacts to ensure we take appropriate actions to address the situation.
